Hi, I’m Lucy Wake. I’ve been a management consultant for over thirteen years and feel very fortunate to be able to say I love my work so much. I get a real kick from helping individuals improve and from supporting organisations to be better at what they do, while providing great places to work.

I love learning and have even gone back to school recently to add a Postgraduate Certificate in Business and Personal Coaching to my Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies. I am accredited with the International Coaching Federation and am also a licensed practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Following a disastrous start to my working life with a job in a well-known bank, (feel free to ask me about it sometime) my career took off when I joined British Gas, where I spent ten years in a variety of roles. During the years my children were growing up, I balanced motherhood with a mixture of diverse but interesting positions, from school secretary to PA to the High Sheriff of Leicestershire. Working for Leicestershire Education Business Company (LEBC) then gave me an opportunity to prepare young people for work in a way I wasn’t, and, as importantly, to help employers understand how to help the transition into work for new employees. Taking business people into schools and working with large groups of students was a challenging but incredibly rewarding time.

It was one of these business people who gave me the opportunity to move into management consulting, and it was here that I found my natural strengths and willingness to learn new things has served me well. I love working through complex problems to find straightforward solutions and building trusting relationships to help people develop. I also found an opportunity to continue to support young people into the workplace, as I recruited and managed apprentices into the business.

I continue to have an interest in supporting young people to prepare for work and volunteer as an Enterprise Adviser with Leicestershire LLEP. I support a Leicester school with careers guidance as well as working directly with students to provide experiences and develop skills that will help prepare them for their future careers.

When I’m not working, I love spending time with friends, especially trying out new gins and sometimes playing poker. I enjoy being outdoors with my dog and am a regular at the gym. I love autumn, with all its beauty of changing colours. I also enjoy winter when I always try to spend some time in the mountains to ski. Having had many French lessons, I continue to valiantly try learning the language and am determined that one day I’ll be able to confidently hold a conversation.
